After the Civil War, much of the area where this park is located was settled by African-American families. In 1990, the park was created and named for Earl M. Johnson (1928-1968), the first African-American member of the Jacksonville Bar Association. Earl Johnson worked tirelessly for civil rights throughout Florida. The site contains 2 fishing lakes and 8 youth soccer fields, which are often used by the Jacksonville Youth Soccer Club.
