YANKEE STADIUM, River Avenue and East 161st Street, home of the New York Yankees, is the largest baseball park in the United States. Baseball and football games, boxing matches, and other outdoor events are staged here. Built in 1922 at a cost of three million dollars, the stadium has a normal seating capacity of 75,000 but in September, 1928, at the end of a close and exciting pennant race, it held 83,353 fans, a world's record for attendance at a big league baseball game. The WPA Guide To New York City, 1939
In 2006, the Yankees began construction on a new $1.3 billion stadium in public parkland adjacent to Yankee Stadium. The Yankees are expecting to open the 2009 season in their new home. Once the new stadium opens, most of the old stadium, including all of the above ground structure, will be demolished to become parkland. (The above text was copied from Wikipedia.)
