"The Main Library, located at 1550 Oak Street on the corner of Oak Street and Lincoln Avenue, opened to the public on November 2, 2006. The 47,500 sq. ft. building, designed by Thomas Hacker, Architects, of Portland, Oregon, is the first green building in the City of Alameda and the first green library in Alameda County.

Local residents and elected officials had been working for over 30 years to plan and secure funding for the construction of Alameda's Main Library.

In March 2000, a $350 million state bond (Proposition 14) for library construction was passed in California, and was also approved by Alameda voters. Prop 14 established a highly-competitive grant process by which cities and counties could apply for funding to pay 65% of the cost of their construction projects.

Led by LIBRARY 2000, citizens joined a grassroots campaign and worked tirelessly to inform the community about the importance of libraries. In November 2000, Alameda voters said yes to Measure O, a $10.6 million bond which would provide the local matching portion of the construction costs. A public site selection process was conducted and the City Council affirmed the location for the new library at the corner of Lincoln Ave. and Oak St., formerly occupied by the Linoaks Motel.

In January, 2001, a citizen/staff "Library Building Team" was formed to oversee the planning and construction of the project. The grant application to the State was submitted to the state in June, 2002.

Grant applications were evaluated based on how well the plans met community needs, and our application received a rating of "Outstanding" in every category. In December 2002, Alameda was awarded $15.5 million, which was used with the proceeds of Measure O to fund the construction of the new Main Library. "http://www.ci.alameda.ca.us/library/main.html
