The building was constructed in 1910 and was occupied by A.E Planta who operated an insurance, financial services and real estate business from it until 1930. About then the Café opened up and some sort of eating establishment has been in the building ever since. The present evolution of the Modern Café is a chic bistro style eatery. The sign was installed in the mid-1940s and is a rare example of the type of simple Neon signage that was quite prevalent in downtown Nanaimo from the 40’s to the early 70’s. The sign was recently refurbished and has become a cherished visible landmark in the downtown area of Nanaimo.
