Jeremiah Stewart moved to Mendon from Dutchess County in 1833 at the age of 29. He was one of the first settlers of Mendon. He built his house in 1834. Although the National Register lists the builder as unknown, it is believe that Stewart, a mason, built the house. In 1928 Stewart Canfield sold the Cobblestone House to Monroe County as an addition to Mendon Ponds Park.
