History sign on Baker City Hall in Baker City Historic District.
Marker Name: Baker City Hall
Marker Text: Baker City, the “Queen City of the Inland Empire” at the turn of the century, needed a City Hall that reflected the town’s eminence. The city fathers commissioned a bold and stately Renaissance Revival building. The structure is noted for its rusticated rock-faced volcanic tuff construction and handsome central entrance, crowned with clock and bell tower.
In the early days, the four-faced tower clock glowed bright red at the curfew hour to warn youngsters to hurry home. The clock is one of just two weight-driven tower clocks in Oregon.
