Sir Hans Sloane was, as the plaque says, a benefactor of the British Museum. Sloane's extensive natural history collection helped to found the museum. When the Natural History Museum was created, the Sloane collection formed the core of the new museum. More information here

Sloane was also a successful physician, catalogued the flora and fauna of Jamaica, and invented Milk Chocolate.
