The canals were constructed in the 14th century and continued for 500 years. Several canals ended or started on the Spui. The canals were finally ended in 1900.
Several important buildings are situated on Spui. The 17th century New Church and the "Theatre on the Spui", which is an Art house theatre where many movies are shown.
Interestingly the Spui is favoured by skateboarders. Many Skateboard films have featured the Spui.
