Wow! With 50,000 people in the City of Hanford, and assuming each of us produce 100 gallons per day of wastewater, that amounts to a whopping 1,825,000,000 gallons per year of 'stuff'. If that could only be converted to dollars, we might have a chance at reconciling the national budget!
On a more serious note, the City of Hanford Wastewater Treatment Facility can handle 8 million gallons a day, using both conventional and activated sludge (carousel oxidation ditch) technology. Accreditated by Environmental Laboratories, the facility is regulated by both the State of California and the EPA.
Chlorine gas is used to disinfect the treated wastewater. The City of Hanford pays a contractor to haul off the Grade A or EQ endproduct which is appropriately disposed of - often land applied.
