Located laying on the ground BEHIND maintenance building southbound on I-75 in Rest Area 35 south of Ga 136 exit. This marker post was damaged some time ago and never reset so it lays on it's side behind the maintenace building. Marker is back up.

BATTLE OF RESACA
May 14~15, 1864

May 13, 1864. Gen. J. E. Johnston's forces [CSA] withdrew from Dalton to Resaca, having been outflanked by Federal forces moving via Snake Creek Gap 7 mi. N.W.

Aligned upon hills, N. & W. of here the Confederates withstood repeated Fed. assaults for two days, May 14 & 15.

Federal forces, having secured a river crossing at Lay's Ferry (near mouth of Snake Creek) 6 mi. S.W., Johnston withdrew S. to Calhoun, May 16. This was the 1st battle of the campaign which ended with the capture of Atlanta.
