Carbon River originates at the snout of Carbon Glacier, which is located on the north slope of Mount Rainier within Mount Rainier National Park. The river flows about 30 miles from the glacier to near the city of Orting where it joins the Puyallup River.
The river's origin lies at 3,500 feet above sea level and can be accessed via the 4 mile Carbon Glacier hike out of Ipsut Creek Campground.
Two miles from the trailhead is a wobbly but safe suspension bridge that crosses the roaring river. The trail regularly sustains flooding damage and is only open during the summer so be sure to check trail conditions on the park's Website.
