The Fremont Powerhouse was built in 1908 to produce electricity for nearby mines and towns and represents a historical era of early hydroelectric technology. The powerhouse was constructed of textured concrete blocks with arched windows typical of the Romanesque style. The powerhouse was supplied with water from Olive Lake which was enlarged by a log-crib dam. The water flowed through an eight mile long wooden pipe and dropped 800 feet in elevation by the time it reached the powerhouse. The pipe was constructed of tungue and groove redwood and steel bands. The powerhouse operated until 1967 when it was closed and donated to the United States Forest Service. In addition to the powerhouse and pipeline the Historic District includes a half dozen other support buildings.
