Duxford aerodrome was originally built in 1917 and used as a flight training school. During World War II it became a fighter base used by the USAF. After the war, it was returned to the RAF who used it until 1961. The future of the site was uncertain until the trustees of the Imperial War Museum looking for space to expand and set-up the air museum took control in 1977. The museum has been expanding and improving ever since with purpose built halls built to house themed exhibits.
The museum contains the only SR-71 outside of the US.
