Roadside history sign along Forest Service Road south of Whitney.

Marker Name: Sumpter Valley Railway
Marker Text: Narrow gauge logging railroad between Baker and Prairie City. Started 1890 by David Eccles, completed to McEwen 1891, to Sumpter 1896, Whitney 1899, to Austin 1905, and to Prairie City 1911. Distance 80 miles. Passenger service abandoned 1937. Railroad abandoned 1946. Logs, lumber, livestock, passengers, freight, and gold were hauled.
