The University of Washington opened officially on November 4, 1861, as the Territorial University of Washington. By 1889, when Washington achieved statehood, the school had outgrown its original location in what is now the heart of downtown Seattle. The University relocated from downtown to the new campus in 1895, moving into the newly built Denny Hall.
The regents tried and failed to sell the old campus, and eventually settled on leasing the area. The University still owns what is now called the Metropolitan Tract. In the heart of the city, it is among the most valuable pieces of real estate in Seattle and generates millions of dollars in revenue annually.
Currently, Denny Hall houses the College of Arts and Sciences’ Departments of Anthropology, Classics, Germanics, and Near Eastern Languages & Civilization. Denny Hall also houses the College’s Language Learning Center, a center that serves more than 15,000 students annually, using interactive technology to aid their pursuit of learning over fifty different languages.
Due to seismic, structural, and safety code conditions deficiencies a major renovation of the old building will be undertaken. Capital funding will become available for the project in 2009.
