The community of Prairie City was incorporated in 1891. The Sumpter Valley narrow gauge railroad started from Baker City, Oregon in 1890 and reached Prairie City in 1910. Passenger service ended in 1933 and the depot was closed. Two story building 60 ft x 32 ft. Ground floor contains the waiting room, station agent’s office, baggage and express room and freight office. The second floor had living quarters for the Station Agent.
