The community of Prairie City was incorporated in 1891. The Sumpter Valley narrow gauge railroad started from Baker City, Oregon in 1890 and reached Prairie City in 1910. Passenger service ended on July 31, 1937, but passengers were allowed in the caboose until the line was abandoned in 1948.
