Built for the Droste family of Dutch Chocolate fame (
visit link) and the Dutch Los Angeles Counsel, this lovely home is located at 2025 Kenilworth Avenue in Silver Lake. RM Schindler was one of Silver Lake's most prolific architects of the Modernist Movement. No less than 41 of his structures can be found in the Southern California landscape. Silver Lake has the most: nine (eight residences and one apartment building).
Unlike Neutra's clients, Schindler's could rarely afford the prime lots and the Droste House is perched uphill from the street on a difficult, steep site, but one affording spectacular views over Silver Lake Reservoir.
The interiors are the star attraction with the Droste House. It's reported that as it was nearing completion, Schindler asked the owners to sit where they would dine each day, so he could customize the depth of the window to provide a maximum view. Schindler was forced by the topography to anchor the structure with garages, then build a two-story living room on top. The roof is gabled, but Schindler makes it look totally flat from the street.
