At one time this building was the largest welded steel structure in the world. It takes up an entire downtown block of Vancouver. The building was completed in 1958.

The following facts are from the Emporis building site:
- Designed by McCarter Nairne & Partners
- Building covers an entire city block, bounded by Homer, Hamilton, Dunsmuir and Georgia streets.
- The helipad on the roof has never been used.
- Once the largest welded steel structure in the world.
- In 1954 the federal Minister of Public Works applied to the City to construct and operate a mail transfer tunnel underneath city streets from the CPR station to the new post office.
- Shortly after completion of the tunnel, mail began to move by air and so the tunnel was never used.
- The post office tunnel is two kilometres long and reaches depths between 4 1/2 and 12 metres, and was built at the cost of $1.6 million.
- Opened on March 14, 1958 with Public Works Minister Howard Green and Postmaster-General William Hamilton officiating.
