Boston Common is a picturesque place to take the dog. Though dogs can be walked on a leash anywhere on the common, through efforts by grass roots organizations, a portion of the common is available on the west side of the common during the hours of 6:30-8:30 a.m. and 5-7 p.m. The area is not specifically marked that unleashed dogs are allowed, and there are areas specifically marked "No dogs allowed" (one fenced in baseball field and a tennis court). About.com states that the area is at the corner of Boylston and Charles Streets, however, there isn't much open area there. Where I saw people with unleashed dogs was a nearby baseball field that was not fenced in.
The mark is at the entrance ramp to the Boston Common Garage which is under the Boston Common. To get to the ramp, go on Charles Street, heading NORTH (it's one way) from the intersection with Boylston Street. The area where the dogs were is nearby about halfway between Boylston and Beacon Streets. Other parking spots are available on the street, everywhere, but you might have to do some driving around to find one.
Bring your own bags, balls, whatever.
Personally, I don't have a dog (my cat wouldn't allow me), but I had a friend who lived in Brookline who had access to a designated dog park, so I can appreciate the need for such space.
The place is not enclosed, which is one of the disadvantages, since there are busy cars, nearby.
