Marker Name: Mascall Formation Overlook
Marker Text: John Day country is an elaborate mosaic of geologic action. Here, time is measured in millions of years.
In the surrounding landscape you can view the aftermath of uplift forces, down-cutting erosion, air-fall deposits, lava flows, tidal waves of pyroclastic debris, and the earth stretching, bending, and breaking under pressure.
Only our limited sense of time maintains the illusion of life on a stable platform. Yet, occasionally, a volcanic explosion, or the earth trembling beneath our feet, will remind us of the colossal powers at work shaping the land.
These geologic powers have a mild side. Over thousands of millennia, land-building deposits, gently laid down, have entombed the remains of tons of plants and animals, preserving remarkable detail. At the monument’s Sheep Rock Unit, Painted Hills Unit, and Clarno Unit you can explore the bounty of knowledge these fossils reveal about the past.
