The Lahaina Lighthouse in Lahaina, Maui, was built in 1840 under orders from King Kamehameha III to aid the whalers that were coming ashore from their anchorage in the Lahaina Roadstead. The lighthouse is the first one in Hawaii and predates any lighthouses on the U.S. Pacific Coast. The lighthouse began as a 9-foot wooden tower that was increased to 26 feet in 1866. Light was provided by whale oil and was kept burning by a Hawaiian caretaker for a mere pittance. It was rebuilt in 1905 and the Coast Guard dedicated the present concrete structure in 1916.
