Erected in 1933 by Xavier Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
Founding of Floyd County, Georgia and the coming of the FIRST white men to the site of the present day city of Rome.
More than sixty years before the settlement of Jamestown or Plymouth,
according to verified chronicles of Spain, which record that in June 1540 Ferdinand De Soto, with 600 men came, after many hardships, to the fertile province of Ichiaha and the town of the same name. Located at the head of the river then called Cosa, where they were welcomed by the Indian inhabitants, and where they dwelt until the month of July, enjoying such hospitality, peace and tranquility as they were not to know again upon this continent
