Many folks know about North Padre Island National Seashore and some of the shoreline south of it that has over 50 miles of shoreline available to 4-wheel drive vehicles. Many more visit the beaches of South Padre Island and all of its improved amenities. Few are aware that farther south is the Boca Chica Beach.
Boca Chica Beach is as easy to reach as the other beaches and has all of the varieties that the other beaches have except modern amenities. Here you can drive the beach all the way south to the mouth of the Rio Grande River separating Mexico and the United States of America. Or you can drive north along the beach into Texas’ Brazos Island State Park. The state park is unimproved also. Wherever you go on this secluded beach you will find no amenities. Bring whatever you will need, Brownsville is your nearest supply source. To get to the beach take Highway 4 east out of Brownsville. When you run out of road, you are there.
Enjoy fishing, swimming, surfing, snorkeling, kiteboarding, seashell collecting, and birdwatching. It is also the ideal place to get away from everything, camping on the beach is free. You may even see the remains of a shipwreck from the Mexican-American War.
