Olympic Park is one of Matamoros’ newer creations. Unlike the older plazas, the park is grassy and devoid of commercial establishments. It’s also devoid of people. The structures are interesting, as are the abstract sculptures placed around them, especially the controversial ‘Gateway to Mexico’ designed by famed Mexican artist Sebastian. The cost of the sculpture, transported to Matamoros from Mexico City, was somewhere in the neighborhood of four million pesos - quite a bit of money in a city that is unable to provide basic services, such as wastewater treatment, to all of its neighborhoods.

The only portion of the park that people routinely use is a small plaza on the northeast corner set around a (dry) fountain sculptural piece of children playing.
