The desire for a suitable venue for professional baseball resulted in a grant of $80,000 in 1941 to build a new stadium. The park was opened in time for the 1942 season, but the San Jose Owls folded after the season due to World War II. Finally, in 1947, the new San Jose Red Sox made their debut, and the stadium has not been without baseball since.

The stadium was originally constructed with 2,900 bench seats, all contained within the concrete bowl. Since then, a series of improvements and additions have resulted in an official capacity of 4,200, although the Giants recorded a modern record crowd of 5,219 on 5/9/2008.

The main structure seats approximately 2,800. The first six rows are individual chair seats, and backed bench seats are used for rows 7-20. There are open bleachers down the foul lines, and a large picnic area along left field. There is a new fully animated scoreboard in right center field, and parking is beyond the outfield walls.
