"The Natural" is a movie starring Robert Redford about a young baseball phenom. As a teenager, the character played by Redford, Roy Hobbs, meets up with the best player in the game and promptly strikes him out in three straight pitches in an impromptu matchup. Hobbs is later seduced by a young woman who thinks he's going to be the greatest player ever, and she shoots him in the mid-section. Hobbs then disappears for 16 years.
Deciding he wants to get back in the game, Sam Simpson, a scout played by John Finnegan, signs Hobbs to a contract to play for the New York Knights. Hobbs and Simpson catch a train to New York so he can begin his career.
The scene where Hobbs and Simpson catch the train was shot in Buffalo's Central Terminal, which opened in 1929. The station was used by the New York Central Railroad, later PennCentral and Amtrak, until 1979. The station was unused for nearly 20 years and began to fall into disrepair. Today, the Central Terminal Restoration Committee is slowly restoring the station to its once grand state. Tours are open to the public several times a year, providing opportunities to see the inside.
