The Naugatuck Railroad and Railroad Museum of New England are based in a depot just outside of downtown Thomaston, below the East Main Street bridge over the Naugatuck River. There are signs to the place but they are tricky.

The train first goes southward. The scenes alternate between beautiful views of the Naugatuck River and industrial complexes (which I find have their own kind of charm). The ride stops some miles down, then the engine was moved to the other end of the train and the ride continued on the same tracks, beyond the starting point to an earthen dam with a nice view. The train then was backed into the station.

The web site shows regular excursions, as well as a "Santa Express" Train and a "Day Out With Thomas" (I first read that as "Day With Out Thomas").

If you have the time (and the money) you can go through the "Engineer for an Hour" program where you can learn how to run a locomotive.

The Railroad Museum of New England has some memorabilia of the stretch of New Haven Railroad that is now occupied by the Naugatuck, and includes some stunning photos of the flood that happened in the 1950s.
