"The Madonna of the Trail" design was suggested by Mrs. John Trigg Moss, chairman of the DAR committee and the monuments were created by the St. Louis sculptor, August Leimbach.
This "Madonna" is located at the old State Capitol in Vandalia, IL. At this site is also a plaque that says that the National Road ended here. The road, starting in Maryland was built between 1811 and 1839 when funds ran out and the road construction stopped here. Many years later construction continued until it reached the west coast.
