The route of the National Road normally passed through state capitals, leaving out some cities. Dayton was bypassed, so they decided to build their own road, and encouraged traffic by placing deceptive signs and duplicating the mileposts.

See the attached link for additional details on this ruse. As it turns out, the route was a better way to go since it was maintained. I love the tone of the historic sign; damn revisionists! US HWY 35 runs along this route and into Dayton.
The referenced milepost is gone, and a small apartment complex is constructed nearby. I hope the coords are not too far off, as I had to use my PDA GPS.
