A brass plaque on the pole says "Presented to Elmhurst College by participants of the Golden Apple Teacher Education Progam, Summer 2005". I found the pole by luck while taking a stroll on the campus.
Perhaps related, the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr attended Elmhurst College and graduated in 1910. He is immortalized with a statue on campus. Among many other achievements, Niebuhr is the author of the familiar Serenity Prayer:
God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.
