In April 1906, this Hydrant was considered Magical
After the Earthquake in 1906, San Francisco burned for several days. The earthquake ruined much of the city's water system and many fire hydrants had no water. This Fire Hydrant had water and through heroic efforts of San Francisco’s Fire Department and Volunteers, the fire was stopped from moving south of this point. April 18 of every year, The Golden Hydrant receives a fresh coat of paint.

Note: San Francisco refurbishes many old fire hydrants and as a result has a 3" hose fitting while many surrounding cities have 2.5" hose fittings.
