Oxford became the county seat for Granville County in 1811, the previous county seat was called Granville Courthouse. The current courthouse was constructed starting in 1838 and completed in 1840. The courthouse was constructed in a Greek Revival style The courthouse has been added onto over the years however there remains a formal courtroom in the older portion on the second floor. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
