This bridge crossing the Willamette River west of Portland, Oregon has a draw span 516 feet long with 200 feet of open clearance, making it the 4th highest lift span in the world.

This new lift span was completed in 1989 and replaced one of the longest swing bridges in the world. I recall reading an article on the conversion shortly after its completion. The bridge was only shut down for a very short time (my not so good memory seems to think it was about 48 hours) while the swing span was removed and the lift span was floated into place and connected to the towers which had been built on either side of the swing span. Later the center pivot pier was demolished to far below the water line. This is part of the BNSF mainline between Portland, Oregon & Seattle, Washington.

1) After you've found a vertical lift bridge, go visit it, get the coordinates, a picture or two of it, and if it is in use or not still as a lift bridge.
Then log it and post your pictures! At least one of the photos must be of you and your GPS there with the bridge in the background. (No old vacation shots or photos off the internet!)
