Auburn Nebraska began as two seperate but adjacent towns, Sheridan to the north and Calvert to the south. They merged under a new name in 1882 and in 1885 became the new county seat. The present courthouse, replacing an earlier frame building, was constructed with stone quarried near Rhors, five miles west of Auburn.
