he statue an native woman and a Frenchman kissing. It's based on a poem by Olavio Bilac and is an homage to the poet.
The statue was first placed in a plaze on Av. Paulista (between Rua Angelica). It was deemed too immoral by the people of Sao Paulo. From there it moved to the neighborhood of Pinheiros were it was once again deemed as too obscene. It stayed in the city's warehouse until 1965.
Under Mayor Faria Lima, it was placed in the Largo de Cambuci. When residents of the neighborhood signed a petition to have it movied, it was placed by the tunnel on Av. 9 de Julio.
This new placement prompted a city council member to call the statue obscene.
The students of the law school asked for it to be placed in front of the school in downtown Sao Paulo. It remains there until today.
