Halifax has been the county seat of Halifax County since 1777. The current courthouse was completed in 1839. The Federal styled brick building was built by Dabney Cosby, Sr., one of Thomas Jefferson's master builders, who had previous built at least two other courthouses in Virginia, Sussex (1825) and Goochland (1826) Counties. The cost of the Halifax County courthouse was $6657. The courthouse remained unaltered until 1904 when it was enlarged and was enlarged again beginning in 1959 through 1964.
