This is the old Pirelli Tire Plant located south of Hanford, California. Built in 1962,the plant was operated by Armstrong Rubber Co until Pirelli purchased the company, and eventually closed the facility in 2001.

The plant employed over 500 union employees in 1994 when they began a strike at the Hanford Plant. Although the Company and the Union finally settled in 1995, many employees had already been displaced by temporary workers, some were working in other local manufacturing facilities, some retired, and others remained unemployed. Later that same year, blaming decreased sales due to the strike, Pirelli began laying off union workers. It was just a matter of time before Pirelli made the decision to move their operations, and the remaining employees (Union and Management) were suddenly without employment and careers. Needless to say, this impacted many lives within this small, close-knit community.

The building still stands, surrounded by a barbed-wire fence. The parking lot has weeds growing in the cracks; the old turnstile-entrance no longer turns. There is a cache hidden here (very well hidden, I must say) and if you drive out to visit the site you will see more than an eyesore - you will see a sad reminder of the strength that the working man once had in years past.
