Sonora by David Black was dedicated on July 4, 1991. It was the first artwork in Tucson's public art collection. It's in front of the severe white and black of the Joel Valdez main library. There was some controversy when first installed but it grows on your and such great splash of color in downtown. It looks different from each side and is even a restful place to sit.
According to the artist it is "protoarchitecture, an exploration of the relationship between architecture and sculpture" and includes abstractions of the desert landscapes.
