A group of 40 residents from nearby North Street got togther in 1854 to establish a new Presbyterian congregation on the then northern edge of the city of Buffalo. The group built a new chapel on land donated by Jesse Ketchum, a Christian businessman and civic leader.

On August 26, 1858, this small group of Christians laid the cornerstone for what is essentially the same sanctuary now used for the worship of the congregation. The first sermon was preached in the new building on September 20, 1859, when the Synod of Genesee held its meeting here.

The church was designed by H.M. Wilcox and is made of light yellow brick, likely from Ketchum's home country of Canada. The sidewalk in front of the church is made of Medina sandstone.
