Marker Text:
Created in 1865 by the discovery of oil; became a city of 15,000 within a few months. Center of the city was at the foot of this hill. Reservoir stands just NW of here. The Methodist Church, last building to be torn down, was about 150 feet to the east.
As the sign states, there are no buildings remaining in pithole, but there is a site educational center to help you visualize the past. The old streets are mowed to give a feel of the town layout. Street signs throughout the old town, numerous signs with photos and information, and the hollowed-out remnants of some foundations leave the visitor with a vivid sense of this past boomtown. A parking lot is very near the sign.
