SKIRMISH AT BLACK MINGO CREEKOn Sept. 14, 1780, Gen. Francis Marion's Patriots routed a Tory force commanded by Capt. J. Coming Ball. The Tories, attacked on one flank by Capt. Thomas Waties and the other by Col. Peter Horry, fled into Black Mingo Swamp. The short but sharply-contested action cost each side nearly one-third of its men.ERECTED BY THE GEORGETOWN COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, 2005 REPLACING A MARKER ERECTED BY GEORGETOWN COUNTY IN 1941
