Graves Barracks at Fort Lewis is named in memory of Staff Sergeant William E. Graves, posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in 1945.

The Fort Lewis Military Museum has a central courtyard and in that courtyard is a plaque with the following text:
Graves Barracks
Named in honor of William E. Graves
Staff Sergeant 39215973
Company B18th Infantry Regiment, United States Army
Posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy in Belgium
24 January 1945
Originally the plaque hung from 1951 to 1992 on barracks in Aschaffenburg, Germany. When the base closed Graves' family donated the plaque to Fort Lewis. He was a native of Washington State and trained at Fort Lewis during WWII.

First must check in at main gate Visitor Center. Bring driver's license, vehicle registration, proof of insurance and your social security number to receive clearance to be on the base.
