Of all the monuments and memorials in Washington, the Roosevelt Memorial is the most approachable, the one built on a human scale. Where the other monuments fill you with a sense of wonder, this monument brings you peace.

The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, designed by Lawrence Halprin, sits on 7.5 acres on the shore of the Tidal Basin, between the Jefferson Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. It was dedicated on May 2, 1997.

The memorial is pure rustic American, that style of architecture and art that was used by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Walking into any of the four galleries - each represents a term of his presidency - feels like entering a park built by the CCC, with waterfalls crashing over walls made of red South Dakota granite, artwork carefully placed, and boulders strewn about. It is surreal and serene, especially as night falls.

Like the Jefferson Memorial, the easy way to get here is on a bicycle. If you’re walking, the walk is shortest from the Lincoln Memorial.
