Built in 1816 in the middle of the Mississippi River on Rock Island, it sits at the south end of the island and commands all traffic up and down the river.
Fort Armstrong was built after the war of 1812 and was used to protect the frontier. The Blackhawk War occured while it was in service but it was not directly involved in any armed conflicts. It was abandoned in 1836. The building at this site was rebuilt by the Fort Armstrong Chapter - Daughters of the American Revolution in 1901.
