The Yakima Park Stockade consists of three buildings: two blockhouses and the long Visitor Center, originally known as the Community Building.
When the Yakima Park area, now known as Sunrise, was first developed, it was virgin forest land and had to be cleared and have all the needed services built. The first structure constructed was the South Blockhouse portion of the Stockade group. It was built in 1930 and showcases the rustic park style architecture that was popular during the period. The two remaining buildings, the North Blockhouse and Community building where unable to be built until the early 1940's due to financial strains on the park during the Great Depression.
The South Blockhouse served as both Visitor center and employee housing until the 2nd blockhouse and Community Center were constructed. At that point the blockhouses were used as park employee housing and the Community building became the Visitor Center and Ranger Station.
Over 60 years later the structures of the Sunrise Area Historic District are used much as they were when completed in the mid 40's.
