If you check out the favorite courses of the top players, Pickard is always listed as one of the top courses in the country. For good reason. It's a challenging layout that requires length, precision, and stamina. On top of that you have to deal with the many trees, rolling hills and tall grass throughout the park.

The course starts out deceptively easy for the first three holes. Trees are about the only challenges. Then the baskets get a little trickier. 4 is right on the edge of a thick mess of trees and brush. On 5 you have a pond surrounded by tall grass that requires length and accuracy to even have a chance of scoring well. 6 is wide open, except for the basket which is nestled into the trees. On 7 you throw out of the trees uphill to a wide open basket. 8 is long and open until you get to another basket in the woods. The 9th hole is really cool. You have to throw up a small but very steep hill through a very narrow opening. You can see a big old oak tree through the clearing and the basket is near the tree. 10 is long - very long. You have to first deal with a grove of trees, then get over a hill, then down the hill and over a creek. Of course you have to deal with the trees near the basket. 11 is a short tricky hole. The basket is on the side of a small steep hill. Miss the putt long and your disc will roll to the bottom of the hill and a high score. 12 is long and narrow. If you aren't accurate you will be throwing out of thick trees and brush and have no chance of scoring well. Walk over the bridge through the woods to the 13th hole. You'll need a good left to right shot to score well here. 14 is another great hole. You tee off with a down hill shot. you must get through the trees, over the creek and uphill through a narrow opening to the basket. It's just a beautiful hole. 15 is a long hole but a little easier than 14. Just keep your disc out of the trees and weeds on the left. 16 is another deceptive hole. Get through the trees by the tee the into a narrow clearing in a wooded area. The basket is down at the bottom of the clearing. 17 is a short woody hole. If you can avoid the trees you can score well. 18 is a monster. It's long (The short tee is over 600 feet from the basket!). Throw it up and over the hill and then down to a basket that is next to the pond. Whew! You're done, except for the walk up the hill to the parking area.

I went into some extra detail on the holes since this is one of those course that you may hear about when talking with other disc golfers. If you ever find yourself near central Iowa you simply must make your way to Indianola and play this fine course. It's worth the trip!
