Mount Sterling with a population of about 6,500 is the county seat of Montgomery County. The county lies on the edge of Bluegrass country and the mountains. The town was known in the past for its October Court Day, a horse, hound and mule along with many other items trading day, the day is now more of a festival and flea market. The town has an historic downtown area and a Civil War history including a battle fought in the town.
