Corpus Christi was established in 1898 by Fr. Hyacinth Fudzinski, a Franciscan Conventual friar, to accommodate a rapidly growing Polish immigrant community in one of the most densely populated parts of Buffalo.
Corpus Christi was the 7th Polish parish established in Buffalo and the 6th on the east side of Buffalo. The original church was an existing frame house that was immediately too small. It was replaced by a three-floor combination church/school building in 1898. That building took three months to build, and stood where the parking lot is now. Within 10 years, that new church was also too small.
The cornerstone to the current church was laid in 1907. It was designed by local architects Schmill and Gould who also designed two other local churches. The parish eventually grew into a 6 building complex, becoming the focal point of the parish and neighborhood.
The structure is built of Onondaga limestone faced with Medina sandstone in a Victorian Romanesque style. It was originally lighted with 11,000 lights, enough that the church required its own generator system. Corpus Christi has three bells, all in the north tower (left side in the pictures). The largest (2000 lbs.) is named for St. Francis, the second largest (1100 lbs.) for St. Anthony, and the smallest (600 lbs.) for St. Hyacinth. The crosses atop the towers were filled with letters from the parish's schoolchildren before they were affixed to the cupolas. The windows inside were made by Franz Mayer Works in Munich, Germany and were installed in the 1920s.
The Franciscan Contentual Friars gave up the parish at the end of 2003. The Pauline Fathers, who care for the shrine of Our Lady of Czestochwa in Poland, took over the parish at that time.
