The memorials are there for the battle of the Sloedam and operation Mallard. The first memorial is for the French soldiers who died defending the Sloedam in 1940. They tried to prevent the Germans conquering the island Walcheren. This is what it says:

The second memorial is for the Canadian soldiers who fell during operation Mallard. It says:
